MapMentions Privacy Policy

LAST UPDATED 14 JULY 2026

MapMentions (Page to Map) is a Chrome extension by Francisco Macedo, part of Browserbelt. This policy explains, in plain terms, exactly what data the extension handles and where it goes. It is specific to MapMentions — each Browserbelt tool has its own policy.

01Single purpose

MapMentions finds the real-world places mentioned on the page you're viewing and shows them on a map.

02What data is sent, and where

  • The cleaned HTML text of the current page — plus the extract prompt — is sent to Google's Gemini API to identify the places mentioned. In BYOK mode it goes directly from your browser to Google with your own key; in subscription mode it goes through the Browserbelt proxy (apps.fmacedo.com), which forwards it to Gemini and records only usage counts.
  • Each identified place name (only the name text — no page content, no personal data) is then sent from your browser directly to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim geocoding service to look up its coordinates. This request is always direct and is never proxied through us, in either mode.
  • Map tiles are loaded from an open tile server (OpenFreeMap) to draw the map.

03Who receives data

Depending on how you use the extension, data may be handled by the following parties. In bring-your-own-key mode, your AI requests go directly to Google and never touch our servers.

  • Google (Gemini API) — identifies the places mentioned in the page text
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim — geocodes each place name into coordinates (always a direct call from your browser)
  • OpenFreeMap — serves the map tiles
  • Browserbelt server (apps.fmacedo.com) — only in subscription mode, to meter usage and forward the AI request to Gemini
  • Stripe — payment processing, if you subscribe
  • Resend — sends your sign-in emails, if you create an account

04What stays on your device

Your place history, Gemini API key, model preferences, and account token are stored only in your browser's local storage on this device. They are never synced across profiles and never sent to us in BYOK mode.

05Chrome permissions, and why

  • sidePanelOpens the tool's panel next to the page.
  • activeTabReads the current tab only after you click Run — no standing access to your browsing.
  • scriptingInjects the small script that reads the page or captures your selection.
  • storageSaves your settings, history, and API key locally on your device.

06Data categories

Under the Chrome Web Store’s disclosure categories, MapMentions handles:

  • Website content (the page's HTML text)
  • Location (the place names geocoded via Nominatim)
  • Authentication information (your stored API key / account token)

07Consent before the first send

Before MapMentions sends anything for the first time, it shows a disclosure screen naming every recipient of your data and asks you to accept. Nothing is sent until you do. If our data practices ever change, we will tell you in-product.

08Remote code

MapMentions contains no remote code. It never downloads and executes scripts; it only calls documented data APIs over HTTPS and renders their responses as text or on a map.

09Limited Use

CHROME WEB STORE LIMITED USE

This extension’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising or creditworthiness, or transfer it to anyone except to provide or improve this single feature. No human reads your content except as strictly necessary for security or to comply with the law.

10Data retention & your rights

In bring-your-own-key mode we store nothing about your usage. If you use a subscription, our server records only usage counts (which tool, model, and token totals) to meter the fair-use cap — never the content you send. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your account page.

11Children

MapMentions is a general-purpose developer/productivity tool and is not directed at children under 13.
